Mission Statement & Statement of Purpose

Anglican Benedictine Community of St Mary at the Cross

Founded 1866

A Registered Charity Trust, Number 209261: “To advance the Christian Faith, in accordance with the doctrines and principles of the Church of England, and to carry out the Social Mission of the Church, through the support of charitable work for the relief of poverty,  through the maintenance of a Religious Community of women, organised in accordance with the Rule of St Benedict, and dedicated to St Mary at the Cross.”

In addition to its Ministry of Benedictine Hospitality for those seeking Sacred Space and Retreat, and Spiritual Renewal, the Community is the provider of care for 30 residents at Henry Nihill House Care Home with nursing.  People of all faiths or none are welcomed.  In accordance with our Benedictine ethos: “Before all things, care must be taken of the sick; all are to be cared for as Christ Himself.”  The Care Home is owned by the Community of St Mary at the Cross Edgware Abbey Charitable Trust, and managed by St John of God Hospitaller Services.  A bespoke service is delivered to each person in a professional, inclusive and caring manner… Jesus said “What you have done unto the least of my brothers and sisters, you have done unto me.”

At Henry Nihill House, built adjoining Edgware Abbey, the presence of the Sisters and provision of chapel services is a valued dimension in the lives of those who use Henry Nihill House service.  The Sisters offer Pastoral Care and the service provides a high standard of nursing, recognising the rights of each person to make Choices; and retain Dignity, Respect, Privacy and Freedom.  Each person’s need, both service users and staff, for continued fulfilment in life, is seen as a gospel value.  Jesus said: “I am come that you may have life, and have it more abundantly.”
